Taiwan hopes for US trade deal after regional bloc exclusion

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) held the inaugural meeting of the U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue today in Washington, DC. U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach and Taiwan Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs C.C. Chen led the U.S. and Taiwan delegations. Several Taiwanese cabinet members attended the meeting via videoconferencing in Taipei.

The talks focused on areas of mutual interests, including science and technology, supply chain restructuring, and 5G networks and were not related to a possible trade deal.

Taiwan is hoping to sign a free trade agreement with the U.S. after President Tsai Ing-wen eased restrictions on imports of U.S. beef and pork, an obstacle to previous trade talks, in August. The signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) between 15 nations in the Asia-Pacific region further pushes the Taiwan government to seek other free trade avenues. The RCEP includes all of Taiwan’s largest trade partners in the region.
